Hello Nova—To your post about the abysmal situation on our southern border. I see open borders as insolvent philosophies hosted by a scant few: A highly-political population existing principally inside the Beltway.  Have any of them actually visited the U.S. -Mexico border?  I don’t know.

Regardless, I think the southern border remains a historically knotted conundrum with no spotless, “ahh, that’s it” resolution.

And why single out democrats for a rejoinder?   Why not just “A question for all”?

smiley

P.S. Oh my, iIt seems I’m getting uncharacteristically chatty in my advancing age.

Retired people, on a fixed income, are affected by inflation more than most.  Where I live food prices are higher than what is listed as a average.

Inflation by Spending Category

CPI is the weighted combination of many categories of spending that are tracked by the government. Breaking down these categories helps explain the main drivers behind price changes.

Between 2020 and 2022:

This chart shows the average rate of inflation for select CPI categories between 2020 and 2022.

Compare these values to the overall average of 7.09% per year:

Category Avg Inflation (%) Total Inflation (%) $1 in 2020 → 2022
Food and beverages 6.06 12.48 1.12
Housing 4.72 9.67 1.10
Apparel 3.77 7.67 1.08
Transportation 15.26 32.85 1.33
Medical care 2.46 4.99 1.05
Recreation 3.19 6.49 1.06
Education and communication 1.15 2.31 1.02

What does everyone think of Ballot Drop Boxes?
How do they know who filled out the ballots?
If the person dropping the ballot in is the person who it was intended for?

I know it is used to make it easier for people to vote, but shouldn’t there be a system to check the identity of the person voting?  Maybe a person checking the identity of the person dropping it into the box.

School gunman had AR-15-style weapon, 600 rounds of ammo

  • By MICHAEL PHILLIS and JIM SALTER - Associated Press

Police say the 19-year-old gunman who killed a teacher and a 15-year-old girl at a St. Louis high school was armed with an AR-15-style rifle and what appeared to be more than 600 rounds of ammunition. Orlando Harris also left behind a hand-written note offering his explanation for the shooting Monday at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School. Tenth-grader Alexzandria Bell and 61-year-old physical education teacher Jean Kuczka died and seven students were wounded. The attack forced students to barricade doors and huddle in classroom corners, jump from windows and run out of the building to seek safety. Police killed Harris in an exchange of gunfire.

Bill, Guess what?  None of these "shooters" in Chicago or elsewhere, got their guns because they got a "background" check.  What good are of these supposed gun control laws?  It is just a ploy to take guns away from law abiding citizens.  The answer to this question is that  "law enforcement persons...the police, will protect you."  That assumes that we will have a sustainable police force (RE:  NYC) or that the "police" will be on our side when they show up.  I could go on, but  maybe I am "chattering" in my old age!

Rowland, you are absolutely correct.  Taking our guns will not cure this crisis.  Defunding police also will not help.  The biased media needs to stop glorifying these demented people looking for attention.

Jerry Lee Lewis Dead at 87

Legendary rocker Jerry Lee Lewis has passed away.

There were mistaken reports of his death on Wednesday, but they were immediately retracted.

However, that sadly became true as Lewis passed away at his Mississippi home on Friday.

He was 87 years old.

Great Balls of Fire

“The Killer” was a legendary performer during his younger years.

The electricity was amazing when he sat down at the piano, as you can see from the performance…

I have never spoken with anyone who realistically or convincingly advocates taking guns from law-abiding U.S. citizens. Have you?

Sure, there are a rare few who toss that out to see if it sticks.  It does not.

Moreover, in my limited experience, I've never heard anyone really taken very seriously about voiding or altering the second ammendment (well maybe a select few do, but who pays much attention; really?). I suspect the scarce people who mention ammending it have litte to no idea what such action would require.

It is never going to happen, in my opinion, despite the persistent fear the NRA and similar assemblages cultivate. But, it is useful propaganda to the NRA so the head of the association can be be paid about $4 million a year, plus expenses. Oh, my adult son was a member until he discovered this liberal compensation.

I wonder, if the proposition (if taken seriously) to modernize the amendment will experience some traction?

Defund the police?  Come on. It's a senseless, ill-informed, knee-jerk reaction and ridiculous, short-lived, crusade. Fund the police, fully.

CNN:  Presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke reiterated his support for a mandatory gun-buyback program of assault-style rifles on Thursday and said, “Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47.”

“We’re not going to allow it to be used against our fellow Americans anymore,” the former Texas congressman said during the third Democratic presidential debate, hosted by ABC News.

DICK. Defund the police?  Come on. It's a senseless, ill-informed, knee-jerk reaction and ridiculous, short-lived, crusade.

JUST, LOOK AT THE STATES, WASHINGTON, OREGON, N.Y., AND A COUPLE OF OTHER STATES.  (DEFUND THE POLICE) MORE CRIME, FEWER POLICE OFFICERS.  BUSINESS CLOSING OR BURNED DOWN. HOMELESS PEOPLE SLEEPING IN STORE DOORWAYS.  HECK IF YOU DON'T HAVE A GUN USE A HAMMER, TO DO WHATEVER.

Keep those posts and comments coming!!  I love reading and hearing all sides of the issues. Really gives me more information that I needed to hear, so KEEP THEM COMING!

With all the 'stuff', I just PRAY for justice for the idiots.  -The justice will come, whether I am alive or not.-  Maybe I will get my hammer out and put it by my door, or in my carwink

I know that GOD will give the final justice.yes

Everyone be safe and do not eat too much candy.  I do not do ANY sugar anymore, not even the 'sugar free' stuff.  The SWEET stuff triggers my taste buds, so I avoid it all.  And for those that do not remember me, my top weight was 250, and now I am 105, so you know I stay away from that stuff.  Actually, I am trying to put on some weight, but with the healthy stuff.

Everyone have a SAFE and fun BOO time.

Hello Rowland.  Seriously: Beto? How far did he get with that annunciation in his campaign? Guess I don’t pay enough attention to unwise grandiloquence in political campaigns.

And Bill. Yes, a relatively few number of areas of the country have defunded law enforcement. But some have wisely reversed that stance. Others will almost certainly follow.  Portland, for example, used to be a wonderful, beautiful city.  Seattle too. Now?

Maybe the government should, in fact, take away hammers. wink

10/31/22 03:44 PM #6445

Rowland Greenwade

Dick, you previously stated that you had never spoken with anyone who "realistically" advocates taking guns from law-abiding citizens.  Well, maybe you have never spoken with Bobby O'Rourke on this subject, but he was speaking to you and other fellow Democrats when he said it.  I can only assume that he was making a sincere campaign promise at the time.  As to how seriously Democrats take him, I will point out that he is the nominee of your party for the governship of Texas.  I think you will see that most Democrats in Texas vote for him next Tuesday.  Fortunately, most other people in Texas will not!

On a brighter note you seem to understand how bad the idea of "defunding the police" is.  However, you do not seem to understand the longterm damage that movement has done to public safety and law enforcement across the country.  Not just in Portland and Seattle, but also New York, Minneapolis, San Francisco, Denver, New Orleans, Austin, to name but a few.  Maybe things are not so bad in Mayberry, Montana, but from coast to coast and from at least one border, people live in fear and danger of criminal activity against their persons and property.

10/31/22 04:14 PM #6446

Dick Storey

Mayberry?  Gollleee, gulp.  How'd ya know?

Envious?

Of course I understand the impact of the defund fiasco.  It occured, albeit to milder degrees, in some parts of Montana.

We actually get national news--written and TV. Shocking, I know.

11/01/22 10:19 AM #6447

Rowland Greenwade

"Envious"?, no, APPALLED that someone can live in the safety of their "Mayberry" and have no empathy with others who suffer from the "defund" movement that afflicts so many while denying that it exists! Best to you as always, Rowland
