When I was in California, a few years back, there were goats eating the foliage to keep fires down during the fire season.  Do they still use them?

As of today, the fire was 26% contained. The problem now is flooding due to burn scar (no vegetation to hold water). They are allowing permanent residents back into the village in certain areas but they must show proof of residency, bring their own water and food. FBI is now investigating the cause of the fires and offering reward for any information that possibly led to the start of either fire.

The number of residents still unaccounted for has been shrinking significantly after thousands of people fled their homes as two fast-moving wildfires approached their village in southern New Mexico, Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford said Tuesday.

Search and rescue crews have cleared more properties in the areas of Ruidoso, the mountain community hardest hit by the flames, and village officials and volunteers from the American Red Cross have been working through social media to list all those found to be “safe.”

Just a few people remained on the list Tuesday as unaccounted for. They include those authorities have yet to make contact with and who have not been heard from by family and friends.

Surgeon General declares firearm violence in America a public health crisis

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy released his "Advisory on Firearm Violence" on Tuesday, declaring gun deaths a public health crisis. (Credit: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)

Murthy wrote in the report that the direct casualties of gun violence are compounded by psychological ramifications inflicted on victims and bystanders. (Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images)

He added, "The collective trauma and fear that Americans are experiencing is contributing to the mental health challenges that we are facing today. Nearly 6 in 10 U.S. adults say they worry about a loved one being a victim of firearm violence."

The report noted different demographics are affected in different ways by gun violence.

Black individuals suffer the highest rate of gun deaths. American Indians, Alaskan Natives, elderly white people, and military veterans are at the highest risk suicide by firearm.

"Beyond these precious lives that are lost to firearm violence, there are wider ripples of harm to those who are injured, who witnessed the incidents, who live in urban and rural communities where such violence takes place, and who constantly read and hear about firearm violence," Murthy stated.

The public advisory on firearm-related violence is the first document of its kind released by the Surgeon General's Office.

Religious leader wants to display Indian scriptures in Louisiana public classrooms

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A spokesperson of the Hindu community is seeking to have ancient Sanskrit scriptures displayed in public classrooms alongside the Ten Commandments.

On Wednesday, Gov. Jeff Landry signed a law that requires each public classroom, starting from kindergarten to state-funded universities, in Louisiana to display the Ten Commandments.

The President of the Universal Society of Hinduism Rajan Zed said in a statement that the Bhagavad Gita, or the Gita, was a historically significant document and he believes is a treasure that should be displayed in public school classrooms.

The Gita is recognized as a poem in India and used as spiritual guidance, according to Britannica.

Ten Commandments in Louisiana schools lawsuit to test legal precedent

Zed states the Hindu community would cover the cost of the “11×14” posters and no funding from the state or school would be required.

The Hindu statesman noted that multiple prominent Americans were influenced by the Gita including philosopher Henry David Thoreau, physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, philosopher Aldous Huxley and physicist Albert Einstein.

Zed believes that increasing the awareness of other religions would make classrooms in Louisiana “well-nurtured, well-balanced, and enlightened citizens of tomorrow.”

Department of Homeland Security advisory board characterized supporters of former President Donald Trump, as well as those who are in the military and religious people, as posing potential domestic terrorism risks, according to internal documents.

I never thought I would be classified as a potential terrorist, but I guess I am.  I am religious, I support our military and did vote for Trump.  I guess the only ones who are not potential terrorist are Democrats.

If I recall, a lot of Democrats were looting and burning cities not so long ago.  I guess that was for the good of the Country.

It was a dark, stormy, night

The Marine was on his first assignment, and it was guard duty.

A General stepped out taking his dog for a walk

The nervous young Private snapped to attention, made a perfect salute, and snapped out “Sir, Good Evening, Sir!”

The General, out for some relaxation, returned the salute and said “Good evening soldier, nice night, isn't it?”

Well it wasn't a nice night, but the Private wasn't going to disagree with the General, so the he saluted again and replied “Sir, Yes Sir!”.

The General continued, “You know there's something about a stormy night that I find soothing, it's really relaxing

Don't you agree?”

The Private didn't agree, but them the private was just a private, and responded “Sir, Yes Sir!”

The General, pointing at the dog, “This is a Golden Retriever, the best type of dog to train.”

The Private glanced at the dog, saluted yet again and said “Sir, Yes Sir!”

The General continued “I got this dog for my wife.”

The Private simply said “Good trade Sir!”

The General went out to find that none of his soldiers were there

One finally ran up, panting heavily.

“Sorry, sir! I can explain, you see I had a date and it ran a little late

I ran to the bus but missed it, I hailed a cab but it broke down, found a farm, bought a horse but it dropped dead, ran 10 miles, and now I'm here.”

The General was very skeptical about this explanation but at least he was here so he let the soldier go

Moments late, eight more soldiers came up to the general panting, he asked them why they were late.

“Sorry, sir! I had a date and it ran a little late, I ran to the bus but missed it, I hailed a cab but it broke down, found a farm, bought a horse but it dropped dead, ran 10 miles, and now I'm here.”

The General eyed them, feeling very skeptical but since he let the first guy go, he let them go, too

A ninth soldiers jogged up to the General, panting heavily.

“Sorry, sir! I had a date and it ran a little late, I ran to the bus but missed it, I hailed a cab but…”

“Let me guess,” the General interrupted, “it broke down.”

“No,” said the soldier, “there were so many dead horses in the road, it took forever to get around them.”

Perhaps some (most, all?) of you do not see the CNN website. So, you might find this interesting.

From CNN website—today.

Joe Biden’s performance at the CNN presidential debate against Donald Trump has raised concerns with US allies - particularly within NATO and Europe.

Those concerns, to be clear, are not about whether or not Biden is fit to make decisions. They are not worried that he will implement dangerous policies or take dramatic actions internationally – always a factor when talking about the person in charge of the world’s most powerful armed forces, a nuclear arsenal and largest economy.

The common view among US allies is that Biden is a sensible man who surrounds himself with sensible people and whatever happens, they will continue to make rational, reasonable decisions.

Nor is the concern that Biden’s stumbling, at times incomprehensible, performance has ensured a second Trump term. The prospect of a Trump return is a concern, but it has already been baked into allied thinking.

Europe, in particular, has never really moved on from Trump 1.0 and has held the view since 2020: that if it could happen once, it could happen again. That has been at the heart of European strategic thinking since Trump took office in 2016 and has continued through Biden’s presidency.

The concerns that America’s allies have are that the most powerful country on earth cannot provide the one thing they most want: stability.  ...............>>

The world saw an old man struggling to speak eloquently or coherently. Whether you are a supporter or opponent, that performance raises legitimate questions about whether or not he is simply too old for the job he wants to keep doing.

Stability means more than political stability or consistency. If the noise and questions about Biden’s ability to govern continue, allies fear that he will be unable – fairly or unfairly – to provide the stability the West desperately needs at an uncertain time.

Also on CNN today “Old age is a shipwreck.”

That’s how former French President Charles de Gaulle explained the arc of Marshal Philippe Pétain’s career. A military hero of World War I, Pétain formed the Vichy government at the age of 84 and shamefully collaborated with the Nazis who had invaded much of France in World War II.   But there is a far more positive model for governing at an advanced age: Benjamin Franklin. “As an octogenarian, he was by far the oldest delegate at the Constitutional Convention,” wrote Eric Weiner, an author and former NPR international correspondent. “Many doubted whether Franklin was up to the task and snickered behind his back, but he proved them wrong. He contributed mightily, helping to set a tone of compromise and crafting a breakthrough that saved the day, and the young republic.”

Franklin was 81 then, the same age as President Joe Biden. “Lost in the debate about how old is too old to occupy the White House is the fact that chronological age tells us little about a person,” Weiner wrote. “It is not how old someone is but the kind of old that matters. Are they grumpy old or sanguine old? Resigned old or bold old? Franklin was in a category unto himself. He was never president, of course, but he proved that age need not be an impediment to sage and inspired leadership.”

Neither a Pétain nor a Franklin showed up for Thursday’s presidential debate on CNN, but the two highly imperfect performances by Biden and former President Donald Trump set off alarm bells among many Americans who have to choose a president this fall. Who’s a better golf player, who has the “biggest heart,” who did or didn’t have sex with a porn star and has the “morals of an alley cat” were among the surreal moments in the 90-minute debate. --------------------------->

After listening to CNN, MSN, ABC, NBC, etc and the Democrats bash Biden after the debate and stating that he should drop out of race, I find it hard to believe that you really think he is able to make good decisions as President.  After The Biden Team said he wasn’t backing out and they found out they may not be able to force him out, they changed their tune.

I personally don’t think Biden will be head of the ticket and the Democrats will find a way to force him out.  I guess that means that the people in charge will decide who they think you should vote for.  This doesn’t seem very Democratic to me but what do I know.

Just my thoughts.

Nova--I just sent copies of articles.  I did not intend to imply anything about either candidate and decision-making.

From the Denver Post online, today.  Hard to argue against this comment.

Biden should step aside for another candidate who can defeat Trump

Last night I watched a debate between two men running for President of the United States; one came across as robust, eco-centric, and delusional; the other as old, befuddled, and confused. My takeaway is that one is off his rocker and the other is, sadly, in need of a rocker.

If these are our only choices in November, I can only say, “God help us all.”

Rowland,

Thanks for the rectification.

You are right, it was a letter to the editor. I did include the author’s name at the bottom and wrote it was from the Denver Post.

And the baseball coach abruptly moved from A&M to Texas.    It was a strange step right after the Aggies' loss in Omaha.  (my long-time friend, college roommate and UNM baseball teammate, Mark Johnson, baseball coach of the Aggies for many years, now retired, explained it seems like personalities were involved, read large egos-my take on it.  I follow Aggie baseball some.)

Take care and enjoy the 4th,

As calls grow for Biden to drop out, new poll shows Michelle Obama would beat Trump

Story by Sudiksha Kochi, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON − Former first lady Michelle Obama would beat former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical match-up, according to a new poll.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted between July 1 and July 2, found that 50% of registered voters surveyed would vote for Obama while 39% would vote for Trump if the presidential election were held today. Eleven percent of respondents said they wouldn’t vote, would vote for another candidate, or didn’t know.  --->
