Dick,  Regarding your questions:  I did not realize that you were such a "touchy-feely" person.  I also hope you realize that a person's Constitutional rights do not depend on how they make someone else "feel".  If everyone in your neighborhood were driving recklessly, it would not make the world safer by denying you your driver's license.  And, driving is a privilege, not a right, as we first learned in driver's training in the 10th grade.  We can make the world a better/safer place by enforcing our laws against those who violate them.  This may take them out of society and discourage them and others from similar future conduct.

Best, as always,

Rowland

Yes, there are serious problems in our nation and in the world that need to be solved.

However, when there is a problem to be solved it's important to apply the proper solution. Applying the wrong solution could actually make the problem worse, and have other unintended consequences.

The rule of law, our Constitution, contains a special section referred to as 'The Bill of Rights' which are the first ten 'amendments' to the U.S. Constitution.  These ten amendments enumerate and protect critical Rights 'of the people.'  History has taught us that these Rights have stood the test of time, and that includes the Second Amendment.

Historically, guns and ammo could be purchased over the counter at any hardware store or even by mail order.  For about two hundred years we never had problems like we do today and guns were plentiful and easy to get!  As society changed some people started blaming the tool and that resulted in the Gun Control Act of 1968.  Unfortunately, since that was the wrong solution it didn’t solve anything and society’s problems only got worse.  So, what’s the new solution? More gun control?!  Nonsense!

That’s all we hear from the Left … more gun control and damn the Constitution!  Translation: registration and confiscation of all guns; that’s the desired end result.  No matter how many gun laws are passed it will never be enough because the people’s right to keep and bear arms is NOT the problem.  The 2A pertains to the lawful use of ‘arms’ and is why it still stands and always should.  There is no shame in the lawful keeping and bearing of firearms, even though the Left is always quick to blame the innocent.  And, they are always quick to blame the NRA when the NRA has never backed the shooter and always stood firm to protect the 2A and lawful use of arms.

EVERY time we hear of another shooting it’s easy to see that laws already on the books were broken.  Why weren’t those laws enforced?  Many times proper enforcement of the law could have prevented the shooting!  It’s abundantly clear that NO ‘gun law’ will stop a criminal nor will it stop a madman because the law means nothing to them.  That’s why any law cannot prevent crime, they can only punish crime!  Unfortunately, government today is failing to properly punish crime or restrain criminals in any effective way.

I and other gun owners like myself grieve along with family and friends of the victims every time we hear of another shooting.  But, we bear no guilt and we reject the stigma of guilt the ignorant and uninformed cast upon us.  It’s time the Left stops attacking the 2A, the NRA, and innocent gun-owning citizens and start demanding true reform.

Restricting or confiscating any gun of mine, or any gun of many millions of other lawful gun owners, will have absolutely no positive effect on the crime rate.  ZERO.  The crime rate would most likely increase because there would be millions of potential victims unable to adequately defend themselves. It’s not the gun that’s the problem.  Our guns are only for sport, recreation, and personal protection, so only a criminal need fear our guns!  So you need to look elsewhere for a solution for today’s problems.

In 2020 there was chaos on American streets and the government did nothing, even though maintaining the peace is a primary function of government.  This emboldens criminals.  The police have been defunded to the detriment of all of us.  There is no-cash-bail revolving-door ‘justice’ for many crimes where violent criminals and thieves are quickly released to again prey upon citizens.  Mental health records are sealed for ‘privacy,’ endangering the public.  However, privacy could be maintained but the issue should be included in the NICS database so that purchase and ownership of any deadly weapon could be denied.  There is evidence that the use of some ethical drugs has the unfortunate effect of increased proclivity to violence in patients; this is being ignored but demands careful analysis and a proper response.  Some ‘common sense’ laws to address these problems are more likely to increase public safety than anything the Left is currently promoting!

Even today in our nation, where gun ownership is common and accepted the crime rate is low.  In places where gun ownership is severely restricted, like New York City, Chicago, and Baltimore for example, the crime rate is high.  This is the premise of the book More Guns, Less Crime.  Making America more like those places mentioned is NOT where we should be headed!

Dick any child or teens death are tragic no matter what the cause.

“In 2020, firearms surpassed car accidents as the leading cause of death for children and teens. Deaths due to firearm-related injuries — including death by homicide, suicide, or accident — were around 20% of all child and teen deaths in 2020 and 2021, the largest proportion in at least four decades.”

I wonder if the increase in deaths and injuries are in part due to the defunding of the police movement, lax law enforcement in so many cities, and not enforcing the gun laws we have on the books now?  All this happened in this time period.

Does it surprise you that we have an increase in crime and deaths due to having less police officers and not enforcing the laws or prosecuting the people who break the law?

Hello Nova,

No, it does not surprise me.

Defunding the police was/is just plain irrational, not to mention dangerous. The “squad” is chilling on this one. But defunding the FBI and the DoJ as some MAGA legislatures have threatened for revenge is equally bad.

Failing to enforce the laws now on the books is inexcusable. Of course this leads to major problems.

What does all this do to the morale and recruiting of law enforcement officers? I think we know the answers. Unfortunately.

To the killing and wounding of kids (0-19). Perhaps I am especially sensitive to this for 2 reasons. 1) Our younger grandson, is in 5th grade and lives with us. 2) I was dean at a small college in Colorado when this happened:

Columbine High School massacre

The perpetrators, twelfth-grade students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, murdered twelve students and one teacher. Ten of the twelve students killed were in the ...

We had several students who attended Columbine in Denver and some knew the victims. Awful.

From what I have read much of the problem is illegal guns.  We already have laws against illegal guns so why not enforce the laws and confiscate the illegal guns.  We set up roadblocks to catch drunk drivers so why not have check points to confiscate illegal guns and prosecute or fine anyone caught carrying one.  Weapons cost a lot to replace, if nothing else it will make a person think twice about carrying one.  This will not stop all gun violence, but it may slow it down.  The left is against this for some reason.

It is easy to say let’s ban guns but that only makes it harder for honest citizens to buy a weapon.  Do you really think if guns were illegal criminals would stop buying them.  Drugs are illegal but that doesn’t stop people from buying and selling them.

When the FBI and DOJ are being used as a political tool, something needs to be done.  I don’t think they need to be defunded but I do think new leaders need to be picked to run the organizations.

I am not the smartest guy on the block, but I do know that things need to change.  I also know that continuing to vote for the same people that help cause this problem isn’t very smart.

P.S. Washington Commanders are not having a good season either.

Nova--I agree with the illegal gun checkpoints. Good idea, but probably above the creative intelligence level of some of our congress members. I guess people might just dodge a checkpoint if possible. Nonetheless, worth a try I’d say.

Stopping the sales of AR-15-type guns might help a little. Might. Hunters around here, and elsewhere, tell me no one uses that style of long gun to hunt deer or elk, etc.

The far left is as shady as the far right. In my humble opinion.

I’m not asking about ceasing the sale of guns and I’ve not heard of anyone seriously suggesting taking guns from owners now. Disregarding the far left that no serious citizen listens to, have you heard that recently?

We own three guns. A .38 pistol pistil my wife takes on trial rides to tickle bears and lions, a 20-gauge shotgun and a .22 rifle with bird shot to stop the gophers that dig holes in her hay field that can seriously hurt her horses. And the last two for Montana mosquitoes.

I agree, throw out the far-right repubs and the far-left demos and get on with it.

P.S. Wonderful-looking kids. What fun!

Failed Biden Border Policy Causing Prostitution Explosion

Prostitution is on the rise in New York City and Mayor Eric Adams laid blame on the Biden administration for failing to manage the immigration crisis. Adams said that an influx of female Venezuelan immigrants to Queens, New York, who are unable to find legitimate work is behind the increased numbers of prostitutes working the streets.

New York City has been an official “sanctuary city” for immigrants since 1989, but in the last few years, the numbers arriving in the Big Apple have skyrocketed. Adams said that the policies of the Biden administration, which have allowed millions of immigrants to enter the United States while seeking asylum, are directly responsible for the rise in sex workers. Adams has recently become a sharp critic of the administration he believes allows immigrants into the country, but does not allow them to work.

“This is what happens when you create an atmosphere that people can’t provide for themselves,” Adams told reporters on October 31. “You can’t work, you can’t provide… and have to turn to illegal activities to do so.”

Since taking office in 2020, President Joe Biden and his administration have systematically removed policies put in place during the presidencies of Donald Trump and Barack Obama which have led to an immigration crisis unlike anything seen before. Areas along the southern border at times see 10,000 crossings daily.

Republicans have had it with Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s nine-month blockade of military promotions. And after publicly putting pressure on the Alabama Republican to lift his hold on hundreds of officers, GOP senators are plotting new ways to break the impasse.

During a special meeting planned for next week, some will ask Tuberville to focus his obstruction on only the Pentagon’s civilian nominees and not uniformed officers who have nothing to do with the policy he’s protesting. Others want to shift the fight to the courts to challenge the policy at the center of the hold, which reimburses troops who have to travel to obtain abortions and other reproductive services.

Democrats, meanwhile, are devising their own ways to get around the blockade, and are hoping the GOP frustration they see will push Republicans to support their idea.

The deadlock reached a dramatic and very public phase when a cadre of GOP senators confronted Tuberville on the Senate floor Wednesday night, blaming the Alabama lawmaker’s blanket hold for weakening the military at a precarious moment for the world.

The four-hour-plus event, which forced Tuberville to object to votes on 61 nominees, marked a pivotal moment for Republicans as their private frustrations with the freshman lawmaker spilled over onto live TV for all to see.

“I think what it says about where things are is Tommy’s losing support,” Sen. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota said of the Republican-on-Republican fight. “And you’re seeing the frustration build up because the consequences are building up.”

And while the attempt was doomed — those Republicans knew Tuberville wouldn’t budge — it’s also made some Senate Democrats optimistic that enough GOP members will join their push to confirm most of the promotions in one big bloc.

While it’s not yet clear whether Republicans are ready to go beyond speeches and take action to defang Tuberville’s hold, which is rooted in opposition to abortion policies they oppose, it was a stunning moment for a chamber that rarely sees senators go after members of their own party.

(and so on............)

Tommy Tuberville Isn’t Racist, He’s Just Dumb, Say Republicans

In a new report, Alabama Republicans tried to defend Tommy Tuberville. It didn’t exactly work.

Tori Otten/

November 3, 2023/11:28 a.m. ET

Senator Tommy Tuberville’s ongoing blockade of military promotions has united his fellow Republicans around two facts: His actions are wrong, and he might not be all that smart.

Tuberville has blocked nearly 400 military promotions in protest against the Defense Department policy of reimbursing travel costs for service members who have to travel out of state for an abortion. The Pentagon has repeatedly warned that the block harms military readiness, but Tuberville refuses to budge.

But his own words shouldn’t be taken as a sign that Tuberville is racist, multiple Alabama Republicans told Rolling Stone in a report published Friday. Instead, it should be interpreted as a sign that Tuberville is a blockhead.

“I do not believe that Tommy Tuberville is a racist at all,” one of them said, speaking anonymously. “I really believe that maybe he doesn’t have an understanding of the English language.”

An Alabama Republican lobbyist, also speaking anonymously, separately praised Tuberville’s political skills as “very underestimated.”

“It’s his policy skills where the jury is still out,” the lobbyist told Rolling Stone.

Tuberville’s stunt has dragged on so long that other Republican senators have turned on him. They pleaded with him to approve individual promotion nominations Thursday night, taking to the floor to berate him when he tanked 61 nominations.

The most scathing rebukes came from Dan Sullivan, who called Tuberville’s belief that he wasn’t damaging military readiness “ridiculous” and “patently absurd.”

“How dumb can we be, man?” Sullivan demanded.

One of the biggest ironies of the situation is that Tuberville often says he ran for Senate so he could give back to the U.S. just like his father, who served in the military. Instead, Tuberville is single-handedly wreaking havoc on the military—and may have massively embellished his father’s military record.

In fact, earlier this year, the Alabama Republican argued that the real source of damage to military readiness is the department refusing to allow white nationalists to serve. Tuberville still seems to struggle to accept that white nationalists are, by definition, racist.

We knew Tommy Tuberville was incompetent, but insulting leader of the Marines is galling

Sen. Tommy Tuberville's arrogance in comparing his former job as a football coach to the life-and-death decisions faced by Gen. Eric Smith is truly stunning.

Tommy Tuberville’s incompetence would be laughable if it wasn’t so dangerous. And, now, offensive.

Not content with hamstringing the military by holding up promotions, the Republican senator from Alabama has stooped to insulting high-ranking officers, too, having the audacity to liken the stress a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff faces with what he endured as a college football coach.

You read that right. Tuberville thinks working 18 hours a day drawing up defensive schemes and mucking up his offensive coordinator’s game plan is comparable to the 18-plus hours a day Gen. Eric Smith was working to protect the United States, our allies and, most importantly, the young men and women who serve.

Smith, who is both the No. 1 and No. 2 person at the U.S. Marine Corps because of Tuberville’s performative antics, was hospitalized Sunday after an apparent heart attack.

“He’s got 2,000 people who work for him, OK? And somebody said he’s working 18 hours a day. Jack Reed blamed me for his heart attack,” Tuberville said Thursday, referring to the Rhode Island senator who, unlike Tuberville, knows a little about the demands of military service after being a platoon leader, company commander and battalion officer during eight years of active duty in the U.S. Army.

“Come on, give me a break,” Tuberville continued. “This guy’s going to work 18, 20 hours a day no matter what. That’s what we do. You know, I did that for years because you’ve got to get the job done.”

Ah yes. The life-and-death decisions Smith has to make are exactly the same as what Tuberville faced when he had third-and-eight in the red zone and was trailing by five. Or needed to hire a new running backs coach.

Yep. Exactly the same.

Tuberville’s arrogance in comparing his former job to that of Smith’s doesn’t come as a surprise, sadly. This is someone who had the hubris to think he was up to the task of being a U.S. Senator despite no previous record of public service. And no, being a football coach at a public university doesn’t count, even in SEC country.

And so on.............

The far left isn’t the ones passing the laws that are, in my opinion, damaging the United States.  Mainstream Democrats are in charge of our borders, running our cities, not prosecuting people that break the laws, underfunding police, etc.  But it is what it is, not much the average person can do about it.
