Happy holiday season to all!

Snow, forecast for minus 20 or so Wed. night. Then 20 above on the 25th--time to BBQ on the deck. Native Montanans tell me this is just a good old- fashioned Montana winter.  Wishing you were here anyone????smiley

Wow Dick, I've been there to ski and snowmobile and came to respect "cold". After sleding for the afternoon and a couple of toddys, thought it would be a great night for a moonlight run. This was my first time in West Yellowstone and I wasn't out there for 20 min. and realized this was painful ! ANd it would be 20 min. back. I can relate.

To all of the Coyotes still with us.....MERRY CHRISTMAS .

Dick, You are certainly a better man than I am...submitting yourself voluntarily to such sub zero weather.  If anyone on this website ever takes your opinions "seriously," I refer back to here...Chooses to live in the arctic when other options are available.  This is why God created Florida!!!

If I can share a good story...One needs to actually live in your northern enviroment to appreciate how cold it gets.  One of my best friends in college was a guy from Bismarck, ND.  When it got what we thought was cold in VA, he just laughed at us.  His best story was that one day on the school bus home, 2 guys got into a dispute...shall we say?  When they got to their stop, it was a "fight!"  They spent several minutes punching each other with all they had until they realized that with all their winter clothing, nothing was landing.  So, we are dealing with young males whose frontal lobes are not developed, they agreed to take off their coats.  About 2-3 punches later, they agreed they really did not want thiis "fight."  They were freezing to death! Stay warm and safe!

Dick & Rowland – Here in Wilmington North Carolina area we have a lot of people from New York and other northern states, that are called halfbacks.  They moved to Florida and found it to hot so moved halfway back to this area.  They seem to like the area, temperature, lower taxes, beaches etc but for some reason want to change things here to like it is in New York, which would bring higher taxes. The locals say the people who have moved down here are like hemorrhoids, if they come down for a little while than go back up that is fine.  If they move down and stay, they are a pain in the ass.

I moved here from Northern Virginia, about 7 years ago, and really like the area and have found it to be a great place to play golf and retire.  I plan to stay so I guess I am considered a pain in the ass. 😊

Nova--sage advice!

I asked my wife if I could come in from the porch after al fresco grilling later this afternoon. I'm waiting on an answer as she considers options.

Minus 32 at 6 AM this morning. As they say, you don't have to be crazy........ but it helps. Hey, was up to minus 22 at noon.   Seriously.

When Admiral Richard Byrd traveled to Antarctica to explore the south pole the temperature was, as you can imagine, very, very cold.*  He purportedly said, Damn, it must be cold in Amarillo. **

His first Antarctic expedition was in 1928–1930. He completed three in his lifetime.***

--------------------------------------------------------------

* The South Pole has an average monthly temperature in the austral summer of -28°C (-18°F); in the austral winter, the average monthly temperature is -60°C (-76°F).    (NOAA)

** Apparently, he had not visited SW Montana. :- )

*** Wonder if the good Admiral ever took the 72 oz steak challenge  at the Big Texan Steak Ranch, in Amarillo?  Not familier with the classy culinary establishment?  Visit their website please. The "steak" and trimings must present an unbelievable gastronomic experience wink. No, I have not, but we've driven by there often and know some folks who tried it. Does that count?  (hope not)

Nova, Regarding your "half-back" observation, If I am allowed to comment, and I guess I will...New Yorkers/Englanders are the most dangerous migrants to our southern regions.  I say this being happily married for almost 50 years to a woman born in Brooklyn and reared in Queens to good Republican stock...Yes, these persons do exist.  She is always telling me that she fears that persons from California will move to Texas and vote us out.  As I point out...No one who lives in California would ever want to leave that "paradise" unless they felt they were being oppressed.  My example is that shortly after we moved into our first house in the late 1970's in Austin, a couple from central California moved in next door.  In speaking to them, I discovered that they left because, and remember this before the 1980's, California was "taxing them to death!"  Better Republican neighbors I have never had!

On the other hand, New Yorkers retire and move south  to get away from the more harsh winter climate. Lower taxes are also a factor, but not determative. My observation...They think that government should provide certain basic services that they are entitled to.  However, the bottom line is that they like the climate change. New Yorkers bring their values just as Californians bring theirs.  And, they are certainly not the same!

Always Place And Ice Cube On A Burger When Grilling

Placing just a small cube in the center of a patty helps the hamburger retain its moisture and juices when grilling.

The grill’s high heat is known for zapping natural juices, so this is a simple technique that prevents drying out.

Well, folks seem interested in the cold climate here. I just checked the weather (NOAA). We are just 5 degrees cooler than Austin (39) and 3 degrees warmer than Montgomery (31).

To those good folks who suspect we have lost our minds by staying here after I retired from the local university. We live in a beautiful, country river valley surrounded by mountain ranges (now snow-covered). Currently, there is a herd of about 100 elk some 75 yards north of our deck, feeding in our field of alfalfa. There are multiple herds of deer antelope in our valley as well. “Where the deer and the antelope play”.

No tornadoes or hurricanes, very little crime, no traffic jams, nice golf course, warm summers but not really hot, low humidity, white Christmas, storied fishing and hunting (no chiggers, gaters or feral hogs, to boot). Wonderful neighbors--all republicans Rowland.smiley

Better than Florida? We think so. I"ve been there a number of times, mostly for scientific meetings. Our daughter lived in Orlando for a few years (hated it),before joining us here (loves) it. The fresh seafood in FL. is wonderful but, regretfully, by the time it gets here, not so much!  We do have three marvelous Mexican restaurantes in town. Did I mention the county overwhelmingly supported an increase in funding for law enforcement ? (Yes, we backed that! )

Stay warm in 'bama Will (aka cowboy).

Merry Christmas all  !!!!

(I suspect I may have started something with all this)

FYI, the temperature in St Petersburg Fl is headed toward 36 tonight which means we might have a bunch of wilted plants in the yard on Christmas morning. Finished cutting up the last of the broken limbs from the tornado that passed nearby last week. This comes after two near hurricane misses this fall. Our imported  live 6 ft Xmas tree was $125. The good news is most of the needles will still be on it in the morning.

With any luck this will cut down on the immigration rate from New England and we can go about enjoying our less crowded beaches if the nice weather returns.
I enjoy all the politically charged dialogue on the site along with the normal patter.
May you all be trapped in a wonderful cloud of Christmas Spirit until the March Winds blow it away to prepare for the summer breezes.
