Joe Biden and the Democrats are furious about Elon Musk purchasing Twitter.
But the Left is not going to sit on their hands and do nothing.
And Joe Biden just threatened to shut down Elon Musk with one scary ultimatum.
Elon Musk’s promise to roll back some censorship rules on Twitter outraged leftists who believe in a highly curated online discourse that allows them to define the terms of every debate.
Controlling language is how the government can control thought and even election outcomes.
Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy asked Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre what she meant when she said that the Biden administration would monitor Twitter’s new commitment to free speech.
He also asked her if the government would take action to shut the site down.
“When you say that you’re going to be monitoring some of the speech on [Twitter], if you see something that you don’t like, would you try to shut Twitter down?” Doocy asked Jean-Pierra.
Joe Biden previously threatened to investigate Twitter on national security grounds.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellin doubled down on that warning to Musk.
Jean-Pierre did not disavow the possibility that the Biden administration would use active measures to close down Twitter if it allowed too much free speech.
“So, look, you know, when you — when you talk about monitoring, you know, it is — I hate to break it to you, Peter: Just like everybody else, we very much monitor the news,” Jean-Pierre added. “We pay close attention to everything that you all are reporting, and — and Twitter is in the news a lot. And so that’s what we’re paying attention to. We’re paying attention to what is in the news and what is being reported on — on the misinformation that’s out there.”
“So, yes, we are reading what you all are writing, and looking at what you all are reporting about the misinformation that is out there,” Jean-Pierre explained. “But, you know, I would hope that all Americans, including social media companies, civil rights organizations, as I just laid out, including Fox as well, will agree that we need to — you know, we need to — to, you know, call out hate speech and misinformation.”
Democrats used to have a direct line to Twitter for demanding censorship.
But Elon Musk bought the company and fired all the censors.
That cut back on the Left’s ability to manage the online conversation.
And there is little doubt that if push came to shove, the Democrats would prefer to burn Twitter to the ground if they cannot control it.
