BA.2 variant of COVID-19 is spreading in New Mexico, but hospitalizations are lower than in March

LAS CRUCES - COVID-19 cases have begun to rise again in the northeastern United States, although there are not yet signs it will lead to spikes on the scale seen last year, when the delta and omicron variants drove waves of infection that overwhelmed hospitals.
New Mexico's reported cases have dropped considerably since March, but there is a caveat: daily case counts, which have always been a likely undercount of actual infections, are less representative than ever given the widespread use of home tests rather than lab-verified results that are reported to the New Mexico Department of Health.
The health department, or NMDOH, continues to report daily case counts but said it is following trends in cases over time, as well as hospitalizations and deaths, to assess the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus activity in the state.
"Since not everyone who is infected gets tested for COVID-19, NMDOH has never considered the numbers reported as absolute counts of everyone with COVID-19 in the state," the agency stated in a written response to questions.
For instance, the 4.4 percent test positivity rate in New Mexico over the past week reflects the fact that the PCR tests currently used for lab-based tests are used by more individuals presenting symptoms of COVID-19 disease and are more likely to be positive.
New Mexico saw 753 cases over the week running from April 4 to 11, with Doña Ana County seeing three cases per 100,000 population, lower than all of its surrounding counties.
